Striving For Normal

Normal. It was a relative term, or so I thought.

After a relationship from hell that almost killed me, I didn’t want another man in my life. A job, a home, and great friends were all I needed.

Simple.

Uncomplicated.

Until two men interrupted the calm I was pretending to be.

One could take me to the future—a future I never dared to dream I could have. A man who gave me a chance to smile and fix the mistakes I’d made. But, I shouldn’t get a second chance at a happily ever after.

The other would take me back to the past—a past I didn’t want but was all I knew. After losing the most important thing in my life, I didn’t deserve more than that.

Faced with choices I didn’t see coming, I knew I had to make a decision. Be thrust forward into a new life, or be held prisoner of bad choices from my old one. I was just striving for normal, but I didn’t know what normal was anymore.

Ages 18+ due to adult situations and violence.

Striving For Perfection

Perfection is a gimmick.

It’s something they use to sell you shit you don’t need. The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect marriage. Photos of that perfect life are all around us, but none of it exists.

I know better because I take those photos. It’s all a ruse to make us think that's what we want. Behind closed doors, the house is a mess, the family is fighting, and that loving couple hates each other. I prefer a different city every week, laughing friends, and a variety of lovers.

Until Carl. I’m not sure what I want when he’s around.

Perfection is an illusion.

It’s something used to make you forget all the bad shit that happens in this world. It’s an unattainable dream not worth the effort.

I had the perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect marriage. Or so I thought. That illusion died with my wife and slammed me into reality. Aside from my daughter, business deals and making money is where my heart is now.

Until Rachael. I’m not sure what I feel when she’s around.

Ages 18+ due to adult situations and violence.

Striving For Acceptance

We all want to feel accepted, but sometimes we do unacceptable things. When we push it too far and do the unforgivable, are we still allowed to hope for that acceptance?

Or are we doomed to accept a life of loneliness?

My current bed friend is someone who’s struggling to find his own acceptance. His big crime? He’s following his dreams. His father can’t accept the fact he no longer wants to follow in his footsteps. Should he be shut out because he quit the family business? I don’t think so. But if he should, I’ve got bigger problems.

My crime?

I cheated on my husband and then killed the man I cheated with. Would you still accept me?

Ages 18+ due to adult situations and violence.

STRIVING FOR NORMAL:

5 psychologically shocking stars!

This book is about Drew and her past with an abusive ex boyfriend named Craig. Drew attends weekly therapy sessions thanks to him and has the support of her friends she met through Craig, married with kids, Mark and Terri.

Drew was basically sexually abused by Craig, made to let him do things to her in very public places. She liked the thrill of it, but also knew it wasn't right and tried stopping it from happening in public on many occasions.

Skip 4 years ahead and she's no longer with him, escaping the abuse and mental scarred, going to therapy, living with a married couple and their kids, and can't even think about dating. All she's striving for is normalcy. Hence the name of the book.

Thanks to Terri setting up a interview she gets hired at a preschool/daycare. One of the kids father's is interested in her, dangerously so. Drew also had been hooked up on a blind date, after saying she wasn't interested, with Marks friend and co-worker Dennis. Drew is kind of dating him now, but she isn't sure it's what she wants, so she takes it slow.

Drew ends up getting harassed by the father of one of the kids she teaches at the daycare and it turns really bad. He uses his daughter to manipulate her into situations and into doing things, touching her inappropriately and trapping her in the office.  No one does anything to help her except Dennis, who gets into a fight with the father in front of the school. Drew is still attracted to the father, due to her trauma with her ex.

I felt for Drew, going through all she had, it's no wonder she wanted that kind of abusive relationship still.

There were twist and turns and just wait for the shocking ending! A must read.

STRIVING FOR PERFECTION:

5 picture perfect stars!

Second in the Striving Series, but can be read alone.

Perfection is a gimmick.

It’s something they use to sell you shit you don’t need. The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect marriage. Photos of that perfect life are all around us, but none of it exists.

This story is about Rachael, a photographer. Her boss is her ex-boyfriend who she once thought was her ever after and the love of her life. Her world ended when one day she came home from a photo shoot  to catch him in bed with another woman. Not only did this woman take the love of her life, soon her perfect too.

Carl Williamson: He has the perfect job, the perfect house, a beautiful little girl, and the perfect marriage. That is till his wife suddenly died of cancer.

"I know better because I take those photos. It’s all a ruse to make us think that's what we want. Behind closed doors, the house is a mess, the family is fighting, and that loving couple hates each other. I prefer a different city every week, laughing friends, and a variety of lovers."

Rachael & Carl meet at a photo shoot, but that wasn't their first meeting. They've met before and there was a misunderstanding that Rachael ran away from and hasn't seen Carl since... until now, and boy do the sparks fly!

The misunderstandings get cleared up and they have great chemistry but they both have baggage and they don't know what to do about their feelings.

they be able to help each other get through their turmoil?
I loved watching Rachael and Carl fall in love. This story was written so well and kept my attention throughout.

STRIVING FOR ACCEPTANCE:

5 VIGOROUSLY ACCEPTING STARS!

This story is so compelling and dynamic!  I couldn't put it down, even for a second.

Deb:  Surviving a disturbing ordeal and being repeatedly haunted by her actions leading to her murdering her brother’s fiance's, ex boyfriend... whom she was cheating on her husband with.

"My crime?
I cheated on my husband and then killed the man I cheated with. Would you still accept me?"

Deb already had a precariously rocky relationship with her family and was caving under the pressure it caused.

She is straining to move on with her life after everything she's been through. She goes to therapy and is trying to open her own florist’s shop. Coping by closing everyone out.

Her landlord, Mick, is not someone she expected to be supportive, but he is. Even though she doesn't want or think she needs it.

With setbacks happening at her shop, she's afraid that her past wouldn't lead to the future she was hoping for.

Mick: Was trying to open his own restaurant like he dreamed, even if it was against family tradition and his legacy.

Can Deb capture and obtain Mick's love and support, while having her family and friends backing her?

This being the third book in the stand alone, Striving series, was both impressive and meaningful.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

About the author
B.L. Mooney started writing when the voices and storylines in her head ran out of room. They were getting too cramped and neither B.L. nor the characters could take it anymore, so she did the only thing she could do—she made room. She always knew she wanted to write, but vowed to make time for it later. Now that she’s made time for writing, most everything else falls to the wayside. That seems to suit the characters that keep popping up just fine.

B.L. lives in the Midwest and her other talents include in-demand cookies, a very dry sense of humor, and stealth eavesdropping. Some mannerisms, attitudes, or twists come from random sentences picked up while passing by strangers. So speak up the next time you have something to gossip about. You never know, it may just end up on the pages of the next book you read.
